Accordingly, the gap between total consumption and domestic supply is met through import of coal. Specifically about coking coal, its production in India in 2014-15 was 58.52 MT against the demand of 60.05 MT in that year. Hence some import of Coking coal was inevitable.
(b): As per CEA report “Growth of Electricity Sector in India from 1947-2015”, in 2014-15, the share of coal in gross Electricity Generation (Power) was around 76%.
(c): The production from the Private sector was 9.168 Mte comprising 3.05% of the total production in 1997-98 which has increased to 64.07 Mte comprising 10.5% of the production in 2014-15.
(d): The focus of the Government is to improve domestic coal production to the maximum extent possible by facilitating Environment & Forest clearances expeditiously, pursuing with State Government for assistance in land acquisition and coordinating efforts with Railways for movement of coal.
