Question : Toilets at Stations

(a) the reasons why the Southern Railways is not providing basic toilet facilities in all the Suburban stations from Chennai to Chengalpattu and also from Thiruvottriyur to Chennai;

(b) whether toilets have been proposed in this financial year for the above Suburban railway stations and if so, the details thereof;

(c) the details of railway stations in India which do not have basic toilet facilities as on date along with the reasons for the same; and

(d) whether there are any proposals to construct toilets in all railway stations and if so, the date and timeline in this regard?

(a) and (b) There are four suburban sections in Southern Railway viz. Chennai Central – Arakkonam, Chennai Egmore – Tambaram, Chennai Beach – Velachery and Chennai Central – Gummidipundi.
There are 75 stations on the suburban sections of Southern Railway. All the suburban stations have been provided with toilets except Tambaram Sanitorium Station (Suburban Grade-3) where work is in progress and planned for completion by March 2020.

(c) and (d) All the Railway stations, where provision of facilities of toilets is feasible, have been provided with basic toilet facilities except 26 Railway stations in East Central Railway, 07 Railway stations in Southern Railway and 03 Railway stations in Northern Railway, where works are in progress and planned for completion by March, 2020. Further, 02 Railway stations in Central Railway have not presently been provided with toilet facility and the same is planned to be provided by March, 2020.
