Question : Model colleges

(a) whether the Government has set up Model Colleges in various parts of the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise;
(c) the number of such Model Colleges opened in Dumka, Godda and Deoghar districts of Jharkhand during each of the last four years; and
(d) the number of Model Colleges proposed to be opened in the coming years, State-wise?

(a): Education being in the Concurrent List, creation of new institutions and enhancing the quality of education are the responsibilities of both the Central and State Governments. However, recognizing the need for central assistance, the Central Government has implemented various schemes for supporting State Governments. Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), inter alia, central support has been approved for setting up of 130 new Model Degree Colleges (MDCs).

(b): The state-wise details of the MDCs approved under RUSA are annexed.

(c): Under RUSA, central support for one MDC was approved for the district of Dumka in 2018-19. Although, no MDCs were specifically approved for the districts of Deogarh and Godda, 9 more MDCs, in addition to the one in Dumka, have been approved for the State of Jharkhand under RUSA.

(d): Under the scheme of RUSA, it was envisaged to provide central support for 130 units under the component of New Model Degree Colleges and this target has already been achieved.
