Question : EMPLOYEES UNDER ESI SCHEME



(a) whether the Government have recently taken a decision to bring the employees of private education and medical organisations within the ambit of Employees State Insurance Scheme;

(b) if so, the number of employees likely to be benefitted under this scheme;

(c) whether the Government propose to bring the employees of other private sectors within this ambit who have not been covered so far;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) by when the decision is likely to be taken in this regard?

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF LABOUR (SHRI VIJAY GOEL)

(a): The ESI Corporation has recently taken a decision to extend provisions of the ESI Act 1948 to private educational institutions. However, it is for the State Governments to decide the scope of coverage of the educational Institutions.

(b): About 1.5 to 2 lakh employees may get covered if all the State Governments extend the provisions to private educational institutions.

(c): Presently there is no proposal to extend the provisions to other sectors.

(d) & (e): Does not arise.
