TECHNOLOGY TO FORECAST REVERSE EARTHQUAKES

3399. SHRI BHANU PRATAP SINGH VERMA:
Will the Minister of EARTH SCIENCES be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government has any other method or technology apart from seismometer to forecast and measure severe earthquakes;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the Government does not have any indigenously developed satellite system or information recorder system by which prior information of earthquakes could be received;
(d) if so, whether the Government has entered into any agreement or treaty with other countries to received prior information of earthquake and find out its location and intensity and if so, the details thereof;
(e) if not, whether the Government proposes to formulate any plan in this regard?

(a) No Sir, There is no technology available other than seismic sensors to monitor and measure the severe earthquakes. Also, no scientific technique is available, the world over, to predict the occurrence of the earthquakes with reasonable degree of accuracy in terms of space, time and magnitude.
(b) Question doesnot arise.
(c) Presently, such system does not exit anywhere in the world.
(d) Question does not arise.
(e) At present there is no proposal to formulate any plan, in view of the above.
