(a) the number of people living below the poverty line in various States during the Ninth Five Year Plan;

(b) the details of the areas where more than 40 per cent people are living below the poverty line, State-wise; and

(a) The Planning Commission estimates poverty at national and state level from the large sample surveys on household consumer expenditure conducted by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) at an interval of approximately five years. The two latest such surveys were conducted in 1993-94 (NSS 50th Round) and 1999-2000 (NSS 55th Round). The state wise percentage and number of people living below the poverty line for the years 1993-94 and 1999-2000 are given in Annexure I.

(b) Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh and Dadra & Nagar Haveli have more than 40 percent of the people living below poverty line in 1993-94. Whereas in 1999-2000, Bihar and Orissa are the only states which have more than 40 percent of the people living below poverty line.

(c) Tenth Five Year Plan is under preparation.
