Question : Generation of Renewable Energy

(a) whether the Government has set target of generating 175 Giga watt renewable energy by 2022 under climate mitigation project, if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether a study undertaken by the World Coal Association (WCA) has pointed out that renewable technologies in the country are likely to result in reduction in emissions but would not be able to provide the scale of generation growth required to meet electrification targets; and

(c) if so, the details thereof and the reaction of the Government thereto.

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR POWER, COAL & NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) (SHRI PIYUSH GOYAL)

(a): Yes, Madam. Government has set a target of 175 Giga watt renewable energy capacity in the country by the year 2022, comprising 100,000 MW Solar, 60,000 MW Wind, 10,000 MW Biomass and 5000 MW Small Hydro Power.

(b)&(c): The major part of the energy requirement for the growing economy of the country will continue to be supported from the fossil fuel for the next few decades. However, efforts are being made to increase the share of renewable in the total electricity mix. India, in its Intended Nationally Determined contributions (INDCs), aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 33-35% by 2030 from 2005 levels, and achieve 40% of its cumulative installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources, mainly renewable power.
