(a) to (d) Under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP), the Ministry of Drinking Water
and Sanitation, Government of India assists the State Governments technically and financially for providing
safe drinking water to the rural populace of the country. The NRDWP guidelines has provisions for monitoring
at various levels.
At the national level, there is a National Water and Sanitation Advisory Council which is
headed by the Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation. At the State level, there is State Water and
Sanitation Mission headed by the Chief Secretary or anequivalent officer. At the district level there is a
District Water and Sanitation Committee headed by the District Collector/ Chief Executive Officer of the
Zila Panchayat.
Further, the Ministry of Rural Development also has District Monitoring and Vigilance
Committee headed by the concerned Member of Parliament, which monitors rural development programmes
including the NRDWP.
At the Gram Panchayat level, there is a Village Water and Sanitation Committee
which monitors the programme. Feedback received from various levels help in improving the implementation
of the programme.
Further, monitoring at various levels, including regular review meetings / regional meetings
are held at the level of Secretary/ Joint Secretary of the Ministry.
