Question : CRACKS IN SUNSALI HILLS

(a) whether massive cracks have developed in the Sunsali Hills near Guwahati;

(b) if so, whether Geological Survey of India have conducted any study to find out the causes; and

(c) the action taken by the Government to prevent further cracks in the Sunsali Hills?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF MINES ( DR. DASARI NARAYANA RAO )

(a): Yes, Sir. Massive crack has developed in the Sunsali Hills near Guwahati as a result of widening of a pre-existing major joint (crack) of considerable dimension. Incessant rains seem to have charged the slopes covered with thick residual soil resulting in flowage of material and development of cracks.

(b) & (c) : Geological Survey of India had sent a team of geologists to examine and carry out studies on the incident site. GSI took up the said investigation on the basis of the media reports. Suitable recommendations resulting after the detailed studies would be provided to the State Government for implementation.
