Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF POWER ( SHRIMATI JAYAWANTI MEHTA )

(a) to (d) : There has been large scale damage to the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro-electric Project (1500 MW) being executed by Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation (NJPC) in Himachal Pradesh on account of unprecedented flash flood in river Satluj on August 1, 2000. The Power House Cavern was fully submerged. In addition, there have been extensive damages to various infrastructure works such as National Highway No.22, approach roads and bridges.

The exact extent of damages and its impact on the time and cost over-run of the project would be clearly known after the electro- mechanical equipment in the Power House which was fully flooded has been checked and tested to ascertain what repairs/replacements are required. The revised commissioning schedule would be finalised on the completion of the exercise.

The approved revised cost estimate of the project is Rs.7666.31 crores (June, 1998 Price Level) and a sum of Rs.4989.53 crores has been spent on the project upto 30th November, 2000.
