(a) & (b) The Government have been promoting and
popularising the family planning programme since its
inception in 1951 through advocacy, awareness generation
progerammes and use of local specific infromation,
education, communication methods, including inter-personal
counselling through the field staff and NGOs. Use of the
electronic media and the print media constitutes a major
part of this programme. Field publicity is arranged through
wings of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting like
the Sjong & Drama Division, the Directorate of Field
Publicity in the Directorate of Advertising and Visual
Publicity. In recent years some of the additional measures
being taken in most states are: involvement of the Mahila
Swathya Sanghas, Sensitisation programme for local opnion
leaders; use of the Zilla Zaksharatha Samithis for local
IEC; Swasthya Melas, involvement of Health Awareness units
under the Nehru Yuvak Kendras in 12 states, etc. The NGO
scheme under the Reproductive and child Health Programme
Offers a major role to field level NGOs for advocacy and
health communication work.
