(c) whether the Government has formulated any scheme/policy for the promotion of the use of these energy efficient appliances; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF THE STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF POWER (SHRI BHARATSINH SOLANKI)

(a) & (b): Yes, Madam. The Bureau of the Energy Efficiency (BEE) has been conducting study on the impact of the use of energy efficient equipments like air-conditioners, refrigerators, tube lights and distribution transformers through National Productivity Council (NPC). The study has revealed energy saving [in Million Units (MU)] and avoided capacity [in Megawatts (MW)] by the use of efficient equipments as under:

Year	Energy Saving (MU)	Avoided Capacity (MW)
2007-08 1425.87 260.4
2008-09 2106.16 599.44

(c) & (d): Yes, Madam. The Standard & Labeling programme was launched on 18.05.2006 for air-conditioners, refrigerators and tubular fluorescent lamps (TFLs). The programme seeks to enhance energy efficiency of end use appliances and also requires manufacturers to affix informative labels on them. In addition to the above mentioned three appliances, distribution transformers, pumps, motors, colour television, ceiling fan, LPG stoves and storage water heaters have been added in the labeling programme.

In order to enhance use of these energy efficient appliances, BEE is regularly conducting market awareness campaigns and supporting the procurement of energy efficient appliances in the government departments, particularly Directorate General of Supply & Disposal (DGS&D). The labeling for four appliances i.e. room air-conditioners, TFLs, frost free refrigerators and distribution transformers, is now mandatory.
