Question : CASES UNDER JUVENILE JUSTICE ACT



(a) the number of cases involving juvenile crimes registered and pending in Supreme Court and High Courts during the last three years and the current year, State/ UT-wise;

(b) whether there has been rise in Juvenile crimes in the recent past and if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and

(c) whether the Government is considering to have a separate provision in Indian Penal Code and other acts dealing with serious and heinous criminal acts being committed by the minors and if so, the details thereof?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (c) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 477 FOR 11/8/2014 REGARDING CASES UNDER JUVENILE JUSTICE ACT

(a) : Data regarding Juvenile crimes registered and pending in Supreme Court and High Courts is not maintained. However, as per the reports published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a statement indicating the State/UT wise number of juveniles arrested and sent to courts and pending disposal during the last three years is enclosed at Annexure. No data is available for the current year.

(b) : Yes, madam. There has been a rise in Juvenile crimes. As per the reports published by NCRB, the number of juveniles apprehended under Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL) and Incidence of Juvenile crimes under IPC is given below:

(c) : Special provisions are proposed to be made in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2014 to address heinous offences committed by children above the age of 16 years, which will act as a deterrent for child offenders committing such crimes and will also protect the rights of victim to justice.
