Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF POWER

( SHRIMATI JAYAWANTI MEHTA )

(a) to (d) : The Government of India having recognised the importance of Renovation and Modernisation of old power plants in terms of additional power generation potential at a nearly 25% of cost required for fresh capacity addition, after undertaking implementation of R&M schemes for 78 thermal stations and 55 hydel schemes, have now proposed a new scheme for undertaking investments on R&M of old and inefficient plants and for strengthening the distribution system. Under this scheme, additional Central Plan assistance of Rs.1000 crores will be provided during 2000-2001 to State Governments and Union Territories.

However, implementation of R&M projects will go on the parallel to setting up of new power projects.
