Question : Diseases Due to Fly Ash

(a) whether a large quantity of fly ash is being generated by Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS), Bellary Thermal Power Station (BTPS) and private thermal power plants, functioning in Karnataka;

(b) if so, the details thereof during the last three years, plant-wise and year-wise;

(c) whether this fly ash is creating health related problems for the people of the nearby areas and if so, the details thereof and the manner in which the fly ash is presently being disposed of;

(d) whether these power stations have signed any MoU with any brick kiln, cement factories to use fly ash as raw material; and

(e) if so, the details thereof and if not, the measures proposed to be taken to get rid of this menace?

(a) & (b) : As per information available with Central Electricity Authority, the quantities of Fly Ash generated in Thermal Power Stations of Karnataka in last three years, plant-wise and year-wise are as follows:

(c) : No health related problems for the people of the nearby areas on account of fly ash has been reported by Central Electricity Authority or Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL).

Fly ash is being used for making Fly ash based bricks/blocks/tiles, manufacturing of cement, replacement of cement in concrete etc.

(d) & (e) : KPCL has entered into long term contract agreements with bulk fly ash consumers such as Cement industries. Fly ash is also being issued free of cost to Small Scale Industry (SSI) units for manufacture of building / road construction materials such as bricks, paver blocks, tiles, road dividers, etc., as per Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) stipulations.
