Question : Cancer Patients

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government is aware about the increase in the number of cancer patients in the country particularly in Western Maharashtra and Karnataka State;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government proposes to start new hospitals equipped to treat cancer patients in Maharashtra and Karnataka; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b): As per the Indian Council of Medical Research’s Cancer Registry data report on “Three-year Report of Population Based Cancer Registries: 2012-2014, Bengaluru, 2016”, the estimated number of incidence of cancer cases in the country is increasing including in Maharashtra and Karnataka state. The estimated number of incidence of cancer cases reported during 2016 to 2018, State/UT wise, is at Annexure.

Cancer is a multifactorial disease, the risk factors of which interalia, include ageing population, sedentary life styles, use of tobacco products, unhealthy diet and air pollution.

(c) & (d): Under the Strengthening of Tertiary Care Cancer facilities scheme under National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, CVD and Stroke (NPCDCS), financial assistance is provided for setting up of State Cancer Institutes (SCIs) and Tertiary Care Cancer Centres (TCCCs) in different parts of the country.

In Maharashtra, one SCI at Government Medical College & Cancer Hospital, Aurangabad and two TCCCs, one each at Rashtrasant Tukdoji Regional Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Nagpur and Vivekanand Medical Foundation & Research Centre, Latur have been approved and 1st installment of Central share released to the State Government.

In Karnataka, one SCI at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru and TCCC at Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, Mandya have been approved and 1st installment of Central share released to the State Government.
