Question : LONDON OLYMPICS



(a) whether the Sports Authority of India (SAI) had proposed an employment-cum-coaching scheme for all the sportspersons/athletes who participated in the London Olympic, 2012;

(b) if so, the salient features of the scheme;

(c) the number of sportspersons/athletes/coaches likely to be benefitted under the scheme;

(d) whether SAI proposes to take up the matter of reward and appreciation, including providing out of turn promotions to the Olympic medal winners within the respective Ministry/ Department; and

(e)if so, the details thereof?

(a): Yes Madam.

(b): The Sports Authority of India has given special preference to sportspersons who qualified for and participated in the Olympics by offering direct appointment in the Coaching Cadre. On receipt of applications from the Olympians, they would be offered direct appointment as a Coach in Grade-III which is in Group ‘B’ Entry level post in the Sports Authority of India. The process of appointment of candidates under Olympian category would be taken up separately on a case to case basis. The persons appointed under this category are allowed to participate in sports so long as they are active sportspersons and maintain desired performance at international level. Thereafter, these sports persons appointed as Coaches will have to undergo the Diploma in Sports Coaching conducted by Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala before they take up Coaching assignment. (c):The number of sportspersons likely to be benefitted under this scheme depends upon the response of applications received from the Olympians.

(d) & (e):A scheme for giving cash awards to Olympic medal winners is already under implementation. Details are at Annexure-I. The Government has recently announced a scheme for providing out of turn promotion to sportspersons. Details are at Annexure-II.
