Question : DILAPIDATED CONDITION OF NHS



(a) the total number of National Highways (NHs) in the country State/UT-wise;

(b) whether the Government has conducted any assessment of the dilapidated condition of the National Highways (NHs) network in the country;

(c) if so, the details thereof including the number of National Highways (NHs) found to be damaged/in a dilapi- dated state/ not in a road worthy condition, NH-wise and State-wise;

(d) whether the Government has allocated any funds for the improvement of the condition of NHs in the country; and if so, the details thereof for each of the last three years and the current year, highway-wise; and

(e) the details of the expenditure incurred on the repair/ improvement/ strengthening of NHs during the said period, NH-wise and State-wise during the aforesaid period?

(a) State/UT-wise details of National Highways (NHs) in country is at Annexure-I.

(b) & (c) The development and maintenance of NHs is a continuous process. Regular assessment of dilapidated condition of NH is done through field offices of implementing agencies. Accordingly, the NHs in the country are kept in traffic worthy condition from time to time within the available resources. One of the reasons for poor condition of certain NH stretches is inadequate resou- rces for maintenance of NHs.

(d) & (e) The funds allocated for improvement of NHs are State/ UT-wise and not highway-wise. The State/UT-wise details of all- ocation and expenditure of funds for Development and Maintenance & Repair (M&R) of NHs for each of the last three year is at Annexure-II and Annexure-III respectively. For the current year 2015-16, the total Gross Budgetary Support of Rs. 39,852.65 crore is provided for development of NHs and Rs. 2,701.40 crore is provided under M&R.
