Question : Medical Colleges

(a) the number of Government and private medical colleges functioning in the country, State/UT-wise and district-wise particularly Rajasthan;
(b) whether the Government had announced to set up one medical college for every three districts/ Parliamentary Constituencies and if so, the details thereof;
(c) the number of medical colleges required to be set up in view of of the said decision, State/UT-wise details thereof;
(d) whether the Government is implementing any scheme to set up new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals under the centrally sponsored scheme and if so, the number of medical colleges set up under the said scheme so far, State/UT-wise; and
(e) the time by which medical colleges are proposed to be set up in the aspirational districts including Chatra and Latehar districts of Jharkhand, MadhaLok Sabha Constituency of Maharashtra, Araria district of Bihar, Alwar and Sikar districts of Rajasthan and in the backward districts of Gujarat and Bilaspur, Mungeli and Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi districts of Chhattisgarh under the said scheme along with details thereof?

(a) The State-wise details of Government and private medical colleges functioning in the country are at Annexure-I.
(b) to (e) The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing Government or private medical college. Under the Scheme, 157 new medical colleges have been approved in three phases and 71 are already functional. The details are at Annexure-II. Out of 157 sites, 40 are in aspirational districts. The details are at Annexure-III.
Under the above Scheme, all States/UTs were requested to submit proposals to the Ministry under the Scheme, Medical colleges have been sanctioned at Alwar and Sikar.However, no proposal has been received under this Scheme for establishment of new medical colleges at Chatra, Latehar, MadhaLok Sabha Constituency, Araria, Bilaspur, Mungeli and Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi districts from the respective State Governments. Further, all 75 medical colleges approved under Phase-III of this Scheme have already been allocated.
