Question : DEVELOPMENT OF COASTAL AREAS



(a) the total kilometer coastal areas in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Kerala;

(b) the steps taken for development of coastal areas in Gujarat;

(c) whether his Ministry are aware of the scope of producing energy from sea waves of the coastal area in Gujarat;

(d) if so, the details thereof ?

(e) whether his Ministry is also aware of the scope of manufacturing silica from the sand of coastal area of Bhavnagar district of Gujarat; and

(f) if so, the steps proposed to be taken by the Union Government to explore the utilisation of this natural resource?

(a) The total length in line kilometer of coasts in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Kerala is as follows:

Gujarat	=	1215	Maharashtra	=	653	Kerala	=	570


(b) Government of Gujarat has formulated a New Port Policy by focussing an integrated strategy incorporating port development, industrial development, power generation and road and rail network, Keeping in mind 25 to 30 years future demand scenario. As per the Port Policy Gujarat Maritime Board has identified 11 locations for development of deepwater ports. These locations include Pipavav, Mundra, Dahej, Maroli, Dholera, Hazira, Poshitra, Simar, bansivorsi, Mithivirdi and Bedi.

(c) & (d) The wave energy potential from sea waves off Gujarat Coastal areas is less, of the order of 2 - 20 kW/m length depending on the season, which is not adequate for generation of electricity on commercial basis.

(e) In Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, a deposit of only about 400 tonnes reserves of foundry and moulding grade silica sand is reported. At present there is no production of silica in this district.

(f) The exploitation of resources available from the sand of coastal areas is under the jurisdiction of the State Government.
