Question : Infrastructure in Shipping Sector

(a) whether the Government proposes to expand/develop the infrastructure in shipping sector in the country;
(b) if so, the details and the present status thereof along with the details of the schemes proposed/under implementation in this regard; and
(c) the locations identified/proposed for the purpose along with the financial implications involved therein?

Answer given by the minister

(a) Expansion, modernization and upgradation of Major Ports is a continuing process with a view to keep the ports abreast with new technologies and to meet the commercial requirements.

(b)&(c):8 Major projects in the shipping sector are proposed/under implementation. The details are at Annexure-I.

In ports sector, 26 projects at different Major Ports and 3 projects relating to Development of Multimodal Terminal of Inland Waterways at a total cost of Rs.4051.55 crores has been awarded in 2016-17 as per details given in Annexure-II. Most of the infrastructure projects will be implemented on PPP basis with major part of the cost being met by the respective port from their internal resources and the remaining from private sector partners. Besides this, 28 PPP projects of various Major Ports with an investment of Rs.30,776crores are at different stage of completion. Details of these projects are given in Annexure-III.
