Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS (SHRI SARBANANDA SONOWAL)

(a) & (b) The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) sent a proposal on 24.6.2014 to the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports seeking approval of the Government to bid for hosting the 18th Asian Games 2019. IOA informed that the last date for submission of the bid to Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) was 1st July, 2014. IOA’s proposal was examined in the Ministry. The Ministry sought details from IOA regarding detailed action plan, requirement of and estimated cost for renovation of the existing sports infrastructure and creation of new sports infrastructure, estimated cost of conduct of the games, sources of funding, institutional arrangement for the organizing committee, requirement/specification of Games village, requirement of city infrastructure, justification for choosing Delhi as the host city and details of tax exemptions and custom duties waiver required. IOA submitted its reply on 29.6.2014 and the same was examined in the Ministry and subsequently another letter dated 01.07.2014 was sent to IOA to furnish complete information as asked for by the Ministry.

As the last date for submission of bid to Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) was 1st July, 2014, and the IOA could not furnish the requisite details, the Government’s approval to bid for Asian Games 2019 was not given.
