Question : RECLAIMATION OF SEA LAND FOR PORT DEVELOPMENT



(a) whether the Government proposes to reclaim sea land for setting up new ports and expansion of the existing ports;

(b) if so,the details thereof;

(c) the details of fund allocated for the purpose;and

(d) the time by which the expansion and development work is likely to be commenced and completed?

(a) & (b): Development and expansion of ports is a comprehensive activity which is carried out through addition of new berths,modernization of equipment improvement of port connectivity and other areas of port operation.This development may involve reclamation of sea land as is being proposed in some Major Ports, such as Chennai and Jawaharlal Nehru Port.In so far as non-Major Ports are concerned, under the Indian Ports Act,1908,their development is the responsibility of the concerned State Government.
