Question : BANK EROSION OF GANGA RIVER



(a) whether the Government are aware that a vast stretch of Indian land on Indo-Bangladesh border has been engulfed by continuous erosion and thus caused serious concern about the change of Indian border line with Bangladesh;

(b) if so, the reaction of the Government thereto; and

(c) the steps the Government propose to take to check the unabated bank erosion of Ganga in the district of Murshidabad and West Bengal ?

(a) & (b) No information from the State Government in this connection has been received, so far.

(c) The State Government of West Bengal as well as Farakka Barrage Project Authority are implementing various schemes suggested by the Expert Committees to take care of the problem. The Government of India has released an amount of Rs.17.88 crore to Government of West Bengal as central assistance during IXth Plan for Anti Erosion schemes of West Bengal interalia covering the district of Murshidabad also.
