Question : PRICES OF ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES FOR BPL PEOPLE



(a) whether in order to provide relief to the people living below the poverty line (BPL) as well as in drought affected areas of country, the Government have been requested to refix/ revise the prices of essential commodities under PDS to reasonable level; and

(b) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b) : The Central Issue Prices (CIPs) of wheat and rice distributed under PDS have been revised with effect from 25.7.2000 as under:-

The CIPs have been revised on the recommendations of Expenditure Reforms Commission(ERC) and in the light of reduction in economic cost of wheat and rice.

In order to reduce the burden of subsidy on exchequer, Central Government revised the Retail Issue Price (RIP) of sugar to Rs.13.00 per kg. with effect from 1.3.2000. Some State Governments requested to roll back the RIP of sugar, but the request was not found feasible.

The ex-storage point price, retail selling price and the price under parallel marketing scheme(PMS) of kerosene oil in four metropolitan cities viz. Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai and Chennai are given in the Statement at Annexure-A.
