Question : NSA Visit to Afghanistan

(a) whether the National Security Advisor (NSA) visited Afghanistan recently and if so, the agreements signed, if any, during the said visit;

(b) the status of safety and security of Indians and their property in Afghanistan at present; and

(c) the measures taken/ underway to further build strong and close bilateral relationship with Afghanistan since the withdrawal of US forces from that country?

(a) to (c) At the invitation of the National Security Advisor (NSA), the National Security Advisor of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mr. Hanif Atmar visited India on November 8-9, 2015. Apart from holding talks with NSA, Mr. Atmar called on Raksha Mantri and met Foreign Secretary.

During the visit, the two sides discussed various aspects of regional security, particularly terrorism which threatens peace and stability of the region. They also discussed ways and means to enhance cooperation between India and Afghanistan to strengthen the latter’s defence capabilities for safeguarding Afghanistan’s security and combating all forms of terrorism.

Government continuously takes steps to upgrade security arrangements for Indian nationals at our Mission, Posts and various project sites in Afghanistan in close consultation with the Government of Afghanistan.

Government is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Afghanistan and is in touch with various stakeholders, including the Government of Afghanistan, its regional and international partners on developments pertaining to Afghanistan, to strengthen Afghanistan’s security and assist in its development and reconstruction.
