Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE FOR STEEL

(SHRI DILIP RAY)

(a)&(b): SAIL only has Bhawanathpur Limestone Mines in Garhwa district of Bihar, Peripheral development activities are undertaken by SAIL in and around its steel townships. The details of peripheral development work in Bhawanathpur are as under :

1997-98:	Installation of Hand Pumps, Distribution of medicines in surrounding	villages, during cholera epidemic.
1998-99: Distribution of medicines in surrounding villages.

(c) The allocation made and amount spent under the peripheral development scheme during the last three years is as below :

Year	Amount allocated (Rs.)	Amount spent (Rs.)
1997-98 1,00,000 1,00,000 1998-99 90,000 90,000 1999-00 Nil Nil

(d) & (e): In Bhawanathpur, peripheral work was undertaken in 1997-98 and 1998-99. Due to advancement in technology and modernisation of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), which has led to improved production process, the quality parameters have become more stringent. This has led to decrease in despatch of limestone from Bhawanathpur Limestone Mines to BSL over the past few years.

Presently, more than 600 employees are rendered surplus and as such, SAIL Management is forced to bear expenditure on account of salary and wages for the employees. As such, SAIL is not in a position to bear any additional expenditure for peripheral development work.
