Question : STORAGE SPACE WITH FCI



(a) the number of godowns with FCI in each State/U.T. both covered and uncovered, separately;

(b) the exact quantity and value of Foodgrains lying in the open with FCI at present, foodgrain-wise;

(c) the steps taken/proposed to be taken to cover the open godowns by FCI to stop further rotting of the foodgrains;

(d) whether any monitoring agency is available to check the rotting of foodgrain with FCI; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) The information is given in Annexure-A.

(b) The exact quantity and value of foodgrains lying in the CAP storage with FCI as on 31-1-2001 is as under:-

(c), (d) & (e): The stocks of foodgrains with FCI are preserved on scientific lines to prevent damage. The following steps are also taken to preserve foodgrains:-


(i) Foodgrains are stored in rodent and damp proof godowns.

(ii) Pest control measures are undertaken regularly.

(iii) Qualified and technically trained staff is deployed for conducting periodical inspection for proper upkeep of foodgrains.

(iv) To avoid damage in transit, the foodgrains are moved in covered wagons, as far as possible. When moved in open wagons, the same are covered with tarpauline etc.

(v) They are subjected to prophylatic and curative treatments also.

(vi) In CAP storage, the stocks are stored in wooden crates and covered with low density black polythene covers (LDPE) which are water proof. These are tied with nylon ropes to prevent damage by ballooning of covers during high velocity winds.
