Question : Cases against Pharma Companies



Will the Minister of CHEMICALS AND FERTILIZERS be pleased to state:

(a) whether the United States of America has registered cases against Indian Pharmaceutical companies over collusion in inflating prices of generic drugs for non-compliance of good manufacturing practices;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the Government has or is formulating any scheme to protect Indian companies in international market; and
(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b): The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization has not received any such information in the matter. However, as per the information available in public domain, State Attorney Generals from multiple US States filed a lawsuit against several pharmaceutical companies including 7 Indian companies, alleging violation of Federal and State Antitrust Laws by engaging in illegal conspiracies to stifle competition for generic drugs.

(c) & (d): No, Sir. For export and marketing of any drug in other countries, the Indian pharmaceutical companies are required to comply with the requirements of the importing country.
