Question : Private Sector Participation in Water Resources Management

(a) whether the Government is considering to encourage private sector participation in planning, development and management of water resources projects in the country;
(b) if so, whether any feasibility study has been conducted by the Government regarding the costs of such efforts; and
(c) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (c) Water being a State subject, planning, development and management of water resources projects are done by the State Governments. State Governments do involve private companies for preparation of project reports, execution of the projects, etc., depending on the need. Further, the National Water Policy 2012 inter alia stipulates that water resources projects and services should be managed with community participation. For improved delivery on sustainable basis, the State Governments/Urban Local Bodies may associate private sector in public private partnership mode
