Question : New IITs

(a) whether the Government has any proposal to set up six new Indian Institutes of Technology
(IITs) in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof along with the estimate cost of the project and the locations
identified for setting up of the same;
(c) the time by which the new IITs are likely to be set up;
(d) whether infrastructural facilities in some of the existing IITs are not up to the mark; and
(e) if so, the action taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) to (c): Yes, Madam. The Government has decided to set up six new IITs at Tirupati, Palakkad,
Jammu, Bhilai, Goa and Dharwad. The total cost for running these IITs is Rs. 1,411.80 Cr.
to be incurred between 2015-16 and 2018-19. The locations identified for setting up these
IITs are:

IIT Tirupati Merlapaka Village, Yerpedu (Mandal), Chittoor District (Near
Tirupathi), Andhra Pradesh
IIT Palakkad Pudussery West in the Palakkad District, Kerala
IIT Jammu Khanpur Nagrota, Jammu
IIT Bhilai Kutelabhata Village, Bhilai, District Durg, along with 88 acres of
land in village Sirsa
IIT Goa Yet to be finalized by the State Government.
IIT Dharwad Mummigatti & Kelageri Villages in Dharwad Taluka, Dharwad,
Karnataka

Academic Sessions have commenced in the current year 2015-16 at IIT Tirupati, Andhra
Pradesh and IIT Palakkad, Kerala, in their respective temporary campuses. Academic
Sessions in the remaining four IITs are to commence in 2016-17.
(d): No, Madam. The existing IITs are functioning with adequate infrastructure such as
classrooms, labs, equipment and hostels.
(e): Does not arise.
