Question : Female Participation in Education

(a) the number of Universitities, colleges and stand-alone institutions that participated in the All India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE), 2019-20;
(b) whether the share of girl students is lowest in institutes of national importance while female participation in professional courses is lower in comparision to academic courses, according to the above said survey;
(c) if so, the details thereof;
(d) whether there has been an overall increase in female enrolment in higher education from 2015-16 to 2019-20; and
(e) if so, the details thereof along with the percentage of increase in this regard?

(b) Sir, the share of female enrolment in Institutes of National Importance (INIs) depends on the type of INI. As far as overall female students’ enrolment is concerned, they had a share of 52.8% in academic courses and 41% in professional courses according to AISHE 2019-20.
(c) Details of enrolment in various types of institutions are given in the table below. While the overall share of female enrolment in all INIs combined is 24.7% in 2019-20, there are variations between different types of INI. ‘Other INIs’ - AIIMS, IISER, SPA and others -have a better share of female enrolment (39.2%) than the State Private Universities and Other State Institutes where the share of female enrolment is 34.8% and 37.1% respectively.

(d) Yes, Sir. The overall enrolment of female students in higher education has been consistently increasing between 2015-16 and 2019-20.
(e) Table below gives female, male and total enrolment in higher education between 2015-16 and 2019-20. The percentage of enrolment of females has increased from 46% in 2015-16 to 49% in 2019-20.
