Question : Cases Pending with CBI

(a) the number of persons found guilty and punished in corruption cases by the courts after prosecution by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) during the last three years;
(b) the number of CBI cases in which the accused were acquitted and released by the courts during the above period;
(c) whether the Government reviews the functioning of the Investigating Officers of the cases in which the accused have been acquitted and released by the court; and
(d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) & (b): With respect to CBI, the details of cases/persons convicted (Table-1) and cases /persons acquitted (Table-2) during the last three years i.e 2015-2018 (Upto 30.11.2018) are as follows :-

(c) & (d): The Central Government does not intervene in the investigation of cases carried out by CBI. CVC conducts a monthly meeting with the Director CBI, to review the progress of investigation of cases. There is a laid down procedure in the CBI Crime manual to scrutinize and examine the cases ending in acquittal CBI with reference to the justification of acquittal; whether any material is available for filing an appeal against the acquittal or discharge or whether a reference needs to be made to the Attorney General or his nominee to ascertain if the acquittal was due to flawed investigation or prosecution and to fix responsibility, etc.
