Question : Nuclear Power Plants in Collaboration with Foreign Countries

(a) whether the Government is in consultation with some foreign countries for setting up of new nuclear power plants in the country;

(b) if so, the details and the present status thereof;

(c) the targets set by the Government for production of nuclear power in the country during the ensuing decade; and

(d) whether the NPCIL is working with ONGC to build more reactors in the country and if so, the details thereof?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES & PENSIONS AND PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (DR.JITENDRA SINGH):

(a) Yes, Madam.

(b) Presently, discussions to arrive at project proposals in respect of setting up large size Light Water Reactors (LWRs) in cooperation with France at Jaitapur site in Maharashtra and at Kovvada site in Andhra Pradesh in cooperation with USA are in progress.

(c) The targets for nuclear power generation are set on an annual basis, as a part of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited’s (NPCIL’s) annual MoU with Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The generation target (Very Good) for the current year 2018-19 is 38447 Million Units.

(d) The possibility of entering into a Joint Venture with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) to set up nuclear power reactors is being explored. This is however, at a very preliminary stage.
