Question : Crafts Villages

(a) whether the Union Government is encouraging the concept of crafts villages to promote the handicraft sector in some States;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the funds allocated to each State particularly Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh since the beginning of this concept for setting up of crafts villages and the amount spent, State-wise?

(a): Yes Madam.

(b): There is a component “craft village” under Infrastructure and Technology Development Scheme in 12th five year plan. Craft Village is a modern day concept wherein craft promotion and tourism are being taken up at single location. Artisans live and work at the same places and are also provided with the opportunity to sell their products thereby ensuring livelihood. Crafts items are exhibited as well as sold here. Under the scheme there is a provision of providing financial assistance of Rs. 10.00 crores to state and central government organization/corporations/state institutions/local government bodies, Panchayati Raj institutions, urban local bodies.

(c): A sum of Rs. 10.00 crores has been sanctioned and a sum of Rs.3.00 crores released in the state of Odisha during 2014-2015. No funds have been sanctioned/released to Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh state so far.
