Question : Volunteer Teachers

(a) whether it is a fact that the Government proposes to introduce volunteer
teachers in schools;
(b) if so, the details thereof including definition of volunteer teachers and the
minimum prescribed qualifications;
(c) whether it is also a fact that the Government proposes to issue guidelines for the
said purpose;
(d) if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the time by when the said guidelines are likely to be issued?

(a) to (e): The Central Government has launched ‘Vidyanjali’, a School Volunteer
programme on 16th June, 2016 and issued necessary guidlelines. Vidyanjali is an
initiative to involve people from Indian Diaspora, retired teachers, retired
government officials including retired defence personnel, retired professionals and
women who are home makers, having graduation degree to strengthen coscholastic
activities in schools such as reading in Government run elementary
schools through the services of volunteers across the country under the overall
aegis of the Sarva Shikhsa Abhiyan (SSA).
Volunteers under the programme will offer their services to Government
schools through an online portal developed by MyGov.in. The Volunteers will
conduct one or more co-scholastic activities with children in standard 1 to 8 such as
reading to children; helping children with creative writing; public speaking; play
acting and preparing story books.
The programme is being implemented on a pilot basis across 21 States and
UTs.
