Question : WHEEL IMPACT LOAD DETECTION SYSTEM IN THE RAILWAYS



(a) whether the Wheel Impact Load Detection System (WILDS) has been developed by the joint collaboration of Railways and IIT, Kanpur;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the details of the benefits likely to be accrued by the Railways;

(d) whether the trial of the said equipment has been carried out;

(e) if so, the time by which the comprehensive use of the said equipment is likely to be made by the Railways; and

(f) if so, the details in this regard?

(a) & (b) Yes, Sir. Wheel Impact Load Detection System developed jointly by Research Design & Standards Organisation (R.D.S.O.) and IIT/Kanpur has been installed at Ajgain Station on Lucknow -Kanpur section of Northern Railway. The system is operational on two instrumented rails for detecting the wheel defects, including flats, causing excessive impact Load.

(c) Indian Railways will be able to detect rolling stock with excessive impact and detach the same for preventing the damage to rails and rolling stock.

(d) Yes, Sir.

(e) & (f) Comprehensive use has been started and four Wheel Impact Load Detection Systems have been installed at Hospet/South West Railway, Tiruttani-Arakkonam/ Southern Railway, Malada- Dallirajhara/ South East Central Railway & Mahalimurup, Chakradharpur Division/South Eastern Railway.
