Question : CONTRACT LABOUR IN COAL MINES AND STEEL PLANT



(a) whether contract labour is being engaged in National Coal Mines and Steel Plants;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the action taken by the Government to remove the contract system?

(a) & (b): Yes, Sir. The Government is aware that contract labour is being engaged in National Coal Mines and Steel Plants. However, industry wise data about contract labour is not being maintained centrally.

(c): The Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970 has been enacted to prohibit contract labour in certain circumstances and to regulate the working conditions of contract labour wherever such employment is not prohibited. Several notifications have been issued under section 10 of the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970 by the Government of India, form time to time, prohibiting employment of contract labour in various processes and operations in Coal Mines and Steel Plants.
