Question : Single Emergency Number

(a) whether the Government proposes to have a single number based Integrated Emergency Communication and Response system thereby making it mandatory for mobile sets to have an emergency number/button;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the reaction of the mobile manufacturing and service providing companies thereon; and

(d) the time by which the said system is likely to be available in the country?

(a) to (d) Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its recommendation on the subject ‘Single Number based Integrated Emergency Communication & Response System(IECRS)’ dated 07/04/2015 has recommended for Single Emergency Number ‘112’. Meetings with all the concerned stakeholders were held regarding provisioning of emergency button in mobile phone handsets and implementation of Single Emergency Number. Accordingly, Government has approved the proposal for implementation of Single Emergency Number and the instructions regarding the implementation have been issued to all Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). A Gazette Notification has been issued for inclusion of Panic/alert button to all mobile phone handsets in India w.e.f. 01/01/2017.
