Question : Promotion of Boxing Sport

(a) whether India hosted Women’s World Boxing Championships at New Delhi recently and if so, the details thereof along with the number of medals won by India in the event;

(b) the details of federations/bodies responsible for the administration and promotion of boxing in the country;

(c) whether boxing sport has been severely affected by disputes/problems in various federations/bodies responsible for administration/promotion of boxing;

(d) if so, the steps taken/being taken by the Government to streamline the boxing administration and restore its credibility; and

(e) the other steps being taken by the Government for promotion of boxing sports in the country?

(a) The AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2018 was organized by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), in the Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex, New Delhi from 14th to 24thNovember, 2018. Indian women boxers won 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals in the Championships.

(b) to (e): The Government recognizes only one National level sports Federation under the provisions of the National Sports Development Code of India (NSDCI), 2011 as a National Sports Federation (NSF) for management and promotion of the sports discipline concerned. The BFI has been recognized as a NSF by the Government, for management and promotion of Boxing in the country, making it eligible for financial and other forms of support from the Government.

The BFI has enjoyed recognition of the Government as an NSF since 2016 and no instance of dispute/problem in its management at the National level, adversely affecting the sports of Boxing, has come to the notice of the Government since then.

Preparation of Indian sportspersons/teams for international events in various sports disciplines, including Boxing, is an ongoing process. Government provides all requisite financial assistance for nutritious diet, food supplements, equipment, state of the art infrastructure, lodging and for holding of coaching camps for the promising sportspersons/teams identified by the concerned NSF under the Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federation. Government also provides, assistance to elite sportspersons including that of Boxing for preparing for major international events such as Olympics, Asian/Commonwealth Games, World Championships etc. under Target Olympic Podium (TOP) Scheme. In addition, Boxing has also been included as a sports discipline for the Khelo India National level Annual competitions, which is a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent and also forms a platform for identification of sporting talents for their future nurturing. As part of promotion of Boxing, financial assistance of Rs 3.00 crore was sanctioned to BFI under Khelo India Scheme for organizing Women’s World Boxing Championship.
