Question : ROAD WIDENING PROJECTS



(a) whether several projects for the widening of the National Highways in various parts of the country including Tamil Nadu are plagued with delays;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government / NHAI have reviewed the reasons for the delay in such projects;

(d) if so, the details thereof, State-wise; and

(e) the details of the targets set for the early completion of such projects?

(a) to (e) A Statement is laid on the Table of the House.

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (e) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 221 TO BE ANSWERED ON 10TH AUGUST, 2010 ASKED BY SHRI S. R. JEYADURAI AND SHRI ABDUL REHMAN REGARDING ROAD WIDENING PROJECTS.

(a) & (b) Yes Sir. One hundred and thirty seven projects implemented by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and fifty projects implemented by various State Public Works Departments (PWDs) and Border Roads Organization (BRO) have been delayed. State-wise details are annexed.

(c) to (e) The delays have occurred due to various reasons such as land acquisition, shifting of utilities, obtaining environment, forest clearances and railway approvals, poor performance of contractors, law & order problems in some States, etc. The targets for each individual projects have been reset and all the projects are targeted for completion by 31st March 2012, except for terminated contracts.
