Question : HARBOUR PROJECT WORK AT COLACHEL



(a) whether the Government has started taking initiative to invite bidders to take up the contract of the proposed harbour project work at Colachel;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the tender would be invited Internationally or indigenously; and

(d) whether the port will be on the basis of B.O.T. or solely by the Budgetary Provision of the Ministry ?

(a) to (d): Under the Indian Ports Act, 1908, the Central Govt. is responsible for the development of Major Ports.The respective State Governments have overall jurisdiction on Non Major ports and are responsible for their development.At present Colachel is a Non-Major port in Tamil Nadu and is hence under the jurisdiction of State Government of Tamil Nadu. However, a request has been received from Government of Tamil Nadu for development of Colachel Port as a Major Port. Steps for preparation of a Techno-Economic Feasibility and Detailed Project Report as well as Environmental Impact Assessment Studies for the project have been undertaken.
