Question : Basic Sports Infrastructure

(a) whether the Government has taken any measure for setting up basic sports infrastructure in the States of West Bengal and Gujarat;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the quantum of funds allocated, released and utilized by the Union Government for this purpose including the details of the basic infrastructure built up during the last three years and the current year?

(a) to (c) Yes, Sir. ‘Sports’ being a State subject the responsibility for providing sports facilities, including construction of stadiums rests with the State / Union Territory Governments. Central Government supplements efforts of the State/Union Territories by bridging the critical gaps in sports infrastructure. Accordingly, under the Khelo India Scheme, this Ministry has sanctioned 2 projects in West Bengal and 4 projects in Gujarat for development of sports infrastructure during the last three years and the current year. The details of funds released by the Union Government for these projects for the aforesaid time period are given at Annexure - I. Further, financial assistance has been provided through National Sports Development Fund and Sports Authority of India for development of sports infrastructure in West Bengal and Gujarat during the last three years and the current year. The year-wise details of the same for the aforesaid time period are given at Annexure – II.
