Question : Production of Mangoes

(a) the details of the production of mangoes in various States including Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal during the last three years;

(b) whether there is a decline in mango production in the country even though India is the largest producer of Mangoes in the world and if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government is considering any proposal to provide assistance to the affected farmers and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the Government has any scheme for setting up of Mango food processing units in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal and if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the steps taken by the Government to boost the production and export of mangoes including Maldah mango of West Bengal?

(a): The details of production of Mangoes in various States, including Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal, during the last three years, are at Annexure.

(b) & (c ): As per the 2nd Advance Estimates of 2018-19, Mango production in the country is estimated to slightly decrease from 21.82 Million Tonnes in 2017-18 to 20.95 Million Tonnes in 2018-19. The decrease is estimated primarily due to decline in Mango production in the States of Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar, Telangana and Maharashtra.

As of now, no proposal to provide assistance to affected Mango farmers has been received in this Ministry.

(d): The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is implementing Scheme for Creation/Expansion of Food Processing and Preservation Capacities (CEFPPC) under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) for promotion of processing/ preservation of agro-food products including Mango Processing Units. Under this scheme, 51 Units have been approved for Fruits and Vegetables, out of which 2 units are approved in Karnataka, 3 in Uttar Pradesh and One in West Bengal.

(e): Steps taken by the Government to boost production and export of Mango include :-
• Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH ) has been implemented w.e.f. 2014-15 for holistic growth of Horticulture sector. All States/UTs are covered under the Scheme. For improved production and productivity of horticulture crops, activities such as production of planting material, coverage of area with improved cultivars, rejuvenation of senile orchards, protected cultivation, creation of water resources, adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), organic farming are taken up. Assistance is also provided for establishment of infrastructure, relating to primary/mobile/minimal processing units.

• Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Ministry of Commerce and Industry provides financial assistance to its registered member exporters under the components of Infrastructure Development, Quality Development and Market Promotion. Besides, APEDA takes other initiatives to boost exports such as participation in National and International events, opening of new markets in different countries, Outreach Programmes, Buyer-Seller Meet etc.

• Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Central Institute for Sub-tropical Horticulture (CISH) has developed protocol for export of Mango through sea route in collaboration with National Horticulture Board and has organized training and awareness programme on export promotion of Mango.

• Government of West Bengal has reported that West Bengal State Food Processing Industries and Horticulture Development Corporation has established ‘Hot Water Treatment Plant’ at Maldah. Exporters of Mangoes are being facilitated at various stages from orchard selection to transportation of Mangoes to Airport and Mango farmers are being regularly trained for better cultivation practices for production of Mangoes which can comply with export norms and standards.
