Question : INLAND WATER VESSEL



(a) whether there is any authority to register all kinds of inland navigation vessels;

(b) if so, whether the records of the authority are updated and monitored and if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the authority has record of all accidents on inland waterways; and

(d) if so, the details of losses incurred due to such accidents in the last three years and the current year?

(a)to(d): A statement is laid on the Table of the House.

STATEMENT REFEFFED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (d) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 279 TO BE ANSWERED ON 11th DECEMBER, 2014 RAISED BY SHRI KONDA VISHWESHWAR REDDY, M.P. REGARDING “INLAND WATER VESSESL”.

(a)&(b) Yes, Madam, Inland navigation vessels are registered under Inland Vessels (IV) Act, 1917 as amended from time to time. The registration of the Inland Vessels under this Act is done by the respective State Governments. The records of the Inland Vessels registered under the IV Act, 1917 is also maintained by the respective State Governments.

(c)&(d): The inland waterways which have been declared as National Waterways by an Act of Parliament come under the purview of the Central Government. All other inland waterways come under the jurisdiction of the respective State Governments. The State Governments are the designated authority to implement the provisions of the Inland Vessels Act, 1917. Therefore, the records of all the accidents and loss of life and material on all inland waterways including the National Waterways are maintained by the respective State Governments.
