Question : Mass Public Protests in Andhra Pradesh

(a) whether the Government has taken cognizance of the mass public protests in Andhra Pradesh regarding building of the capital city in Amaravati and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has taken cognizance of the police brutality unleashed upon the protestors, especially women and if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government has received any communication from the State Government of Andhra Pradesh in this regard and if so, the details thereof; and

(d) whether the Government has planned any intervention in the matter and if so, the details thereof?

(a) and (b): ‘Public Order’ and ‘Police’ are State subjects as per Schedule VII to the Constitution of India and the State Government concerned is primarily responsible for maintenance of law and order in the State and to take action against the culprits as per law. The Central Government monitors the law and order situation in the States and assists the State Governments in case of major law and order problem by deploying Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) on the request of State Governments.
(c) and (d): No such proposal has been received by this Ministry from the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
