Question : New Medical College and increase in Health Professionals

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government has approved establishment of New Medical Colleges at district level across the country, if so, the details thereof and the colleges proposed in 2019-2020, 2021 and 2022;

(b) whether the said programme is likely to be continued in subsequent years, if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether setting up of these new medical colleges is likely to increase the availability of healthcare professionals and check the existing uneven geographical distribution of medical colleges in the country; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (d): The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for ‘Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals’. The Phase-III of the Scheme has been approved by the Cabinet on 28.8.2019 to establish 75 more new medical colleges by 2022-23. The State/UT Governments have been requested to send their proposals under this Scheme along with Detailed Project Report as per Scheme guidelines for consideration by the Ministry. As on date 49 medical colleges have been approved. Details are at Annexure. This will increase at least 7500 MBBS seats.
