(a) whether the Union Government have received any proposals/projects of Science and Technology from State Governments, particularly from the Government of Gujarat for financial assistance for the years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003;
(b) if so, the details thereof; and
(c) the amount sanctioned for these projects by the Union Government?

(a) and (C) The Government provides support to research projects under the various schemes for promoting science and technology in the fields of basic research, entrepreneurship development, science popularization, energy conservation, remote sensing, biotechnology, non-conventional energy etc. According to available official statistics, a number of programmed are implemented by various Central Ministries/Departments by funding sponsored Research & Development (R&D) projects. The number of such R&D projects funded during the years 1996-97, 1997-98 and 1998-99 in various states is 1795, 1780 and 2050 with an approved cost of Rs.186.48 crores, Rs.218.57 crores and Rs.349.85 crores respectively. The projects supported in the state of Gujarat during these years is 38, 55 and 4 with an approved cost of Rs.2.4 crores, Rs.4.93 crores and Rs.5,56 crores. A statement covering state-wise number of R&D projects and their approved cost for these three years is enclosed.
During the year 2001-2002, the Government has received the proposals on setting up of a seismological research institute and setting up distance education, information and training (DEIT) network for engineering colleges of Gujarat. Regarding seismological research institute, action has been intiated on the report of the expert group constituted to concretize the proposal and work out the details. The proposal on Setting up distance education, information and training (DEIT) network for engineering colleges of Gujarat has been evaluated by the expert group and has been found suitable for support.
