Question : COMMEMORATIVE COINS AND NOTES



(a) whether the Indian currency notes and coins depicting the photographs of Mahatma Gandhiji have been issued in recognition of his services in the freedom struggle of India;

(b) whether on some of the denominations of Indian currency notes and coins the photos of Pt. Nehru and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose have also been depicted;

(c) if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the Government propose to depict the photos of Shaeed Bhagat Singh and Vallabhbhai Patel in recognition of these services to the freedom struggle;

(e) if so, by when; and

(f) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) Yes, Sir.
(b) & (c) The Indian currency notes do not depict the photos of Pt. Nehru and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. However, commemorative coins with images of Pt. Nehru and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose have been issued. Commemorative coins on Pt. Nehru were issued in 1964 and 1989 in the denominations of Re.1, 50 paise and Rs.100, Rs.20, Rs.5 and Re.1 respectively. Commemorative coins on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose were issued in 1997 in the denominations of Rs.100, Rs.50, Rs.10 and Rs.2.
(d) & (e) Commemrative coins on Vallabhbhai Patel were issued in 1996 in the denominations of Rs.100, Rs.50, Rs.10 and Rs.2. There is, at present, no proposal to issue commemorative coins in respect of Shaeed Shri Bhagat Singh.
(f) India Government Mints with their limited capacity are not in a position, at present, to undertake additional commemorative coins.
