Question : DAMAGES TO RAILWAYS



(a) the number of rail bridges washed away or broken by the flood and rains in the country during the last three years, State-wise;

(b) by total loss of lives and Government property damaged therein;

(c) whether the poor planning and workmanship is the reasons for the said damage;

(d) if so,the details thereof; and

(e) the corrective measures proposed to be taken by the Government in this regard?

(a)&(b): Information regarding Railway Bridges is not maintained State-wise, however, it is maintained Railway-wise. There has been no wash away on railway bridges or loss of lives of railway persons due to flood and rains during the last three years. However, Railway-wise details of major damages to railway bridges along with cost due to floods and rains, for th last three years are as under:

2000- South Central Br.No.194(3x12.19m) (Up&Dn) on Kazipet- 695.24 2001 Ballarshah section was damaged
Eastern 16 bridges were damaged in Krishnanagar- 1479.00 Lalgola section and portion of Sahebganj.
2001- South Central Br.No.415(4x7.62m) on Reingunta-Guntakal 242.01 2002 section was damaged Northeast Frontier Br.No.339(1x4.57m) on New Bongaigaon- 230.00 Jogighopa-Kamakhya(BG) section was damaged
South Eastern Br.No.7(8x150 ft.) on Jharsuguda- 1592.00 Sambalpur section was damaged
Southern Br.No.55(3x6.1m) on Mettupalaiyam- 99.60 Coonor section was damaged

(e): Railways take all precautionary measures to protect its bridges, track and other assets from floods and rains by means of advance patrolling, conducting periodic inspections and advance stocking of materials as monsoon reserves to meet any unforseen emergency during natural calamities.
